Crystal Application Guide

Add sparkle to your dance costume with the right crystal and application method. Start by checking the product description: hotfix crystals use heat-activated adhesive, non-hotfix flatbacks need a suitable glue, and sew-on crystals attach with thread.

Choose your crystal format

  • Hotfix: A flatback crystal with heat-activated adhesive on the reverse. Choose this method only when your fabric can tolerate the heat required by the crystal manufacturer.
  • Non-hotfix flatback: A flat-backed crystal without heat-activated adhesive. Attach it with an adhesive specified as suitable for both the crystal backing and your fabric.
  • Sew-on: A crystal with holes for stitching. Useful for feature embellishments where you want a stitched attachment rather than glue.

Flatback describes the shape, not necessarily the application method: a flatback crystal can be hotfix or non-hotfix. Check each listing before ordering.

Before you start

  • Check the garment's care label and the crystal, tool and adhesive instructions.
  • Test your chosen method on a spare piece of the same fabric. Check for marking, distortion and attachment strength before decorating the garment.
  • Lay out your design first and use a fabric-safe marking method, tested in an inconspicuous area.
  • Place a protective layer between garment layers so glue or heat does not affect the fabric underneath.
  • For stretch fabrics, test how the decorated area behaves when stretched. Dense embellishment can restrict movement.

How to apply hotfix crystals

  1. Make sure the fabric is clean, dry and compatible with hotfix application.
  2. Position the crystal with its adhesive backing against the fabric.
  3. Use a compatible hotfix applicator or heat-press method following the manufacturer's instructions. Use an iron only if the crystal instructions permit it.
  4. Follow the specified temperature, pressure and contact time. These vary by crystal, equipment and fabric, so there is no single setting for every project.
  5. Allow the crystal and fabric to cool completely before checking the bond or moving the garment.

Do not use hotfix on materials that cannot tolerate the required heat. Keep hot tools away from skin and work on a heat-safe surface.

How to glue non-hotfix flatback crystals

  1. Select an adhesive compatible with the crystal backing and fabric. For stretchy costumes, check that the adhesive is suitable for flexible fabrics.
  2. Apply a small, controlled amount according to the adhesive instructions. Avoid excess glue spreading around the crystal.
  3. Place the crystal face up using tweezers or a crystal pickup tool, and press gently into position.
  4. Keep the garment flat and undisturbed for the full curing time specified by the adhesive manufacturer.
  5. Check your test sample before wearing or stretching the finished garment.

Work with ventilation and follow the adhesive's safety directions. Do not substitute glue-on crystals for hotfix crystals without checking the manufacturer's guidance.

How to attach sew-on crystals

  1. Choose a needle and thread suitable for the fabric and small enough to pass through the crystal holes.
  2. Position the crystal and stitch through its holes without pulling so tightly that the fabric puckers or the crystal is stressed.
  3. Make several secure passes as appropriate for the crystal and fabric. Use the available holes to keep the crystal stable.
  4. Secure the thread on the inside of the garment. Support delicate fabric where needed, and check comfort against the skin.

Care for your finished costume

Follow the garment, crystal and adhesive care instructions, using the most cautious requirements where they differ. Attachment does not make a crystal automatically machine-washable or wash-resistant. Avoid direct ironing over crystals, and inspect embellishments before each wear. Let any repaired adhesive attachments cure fully before use.
